Visitor Visa (Q1/Q2/S1/S2)
Fingerprints have been launched for Chinese visitor visa application since 1st November 2018. Thus all applicants have to travel to Edinburgh for it in person.
The Q1-style visa is issued to those who are family members of Chinese citizens or of foreigners with Chinese permanent residence and intend to go to China for a long-term family reunion, or to those who intend to go to China for the purposes of foster care (intended duration of stay in China exceeding 180 days.) Fingerprints are required for Q1.
The Q2-style is issued to those who intend to visit relatives who are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreigners with permanent residence in China; the intended duration of stay is limited to no more than 180 days. Fingerprints are required for Q2.
The S1-style is issued to relatives of foreigners working or studying in China for the purpose of long-term visit, or to those who intend to visit China for other private reasons (intended duration of stay exceeding 180 days). Fingerprints are required for S1.
The S2-style is issued to those wishing to visit family members that are foreigners working or studying in China, or to those who intend to go to China for other private reasons. The intended duration of stay in China is limited to no more than 180 days. Fingerpirnts are required for S2.

A photocopy of your current and valid passport

A passport-size photo required in the following
- a photo background in white or light colour
- a high-quality photo paper
- is 35mm by 45mm or 50mm by 50mm in size
- full face centred in the middle without hat

Q2-style:
- An invitation letter provided by a Chinese citizen should contain the following documents:
- Information of the applicant (incl. full name, gender, date of birth, passport number, etc.)
- Information regarding the visit (incl. purpose of visit, intended arrival date, intended place(s) to stay, intended duration of stay, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, and details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China);
- Information of the inviting party (incl. name, contact telephone number, address, signature of individual).
- A photocopy of both sides of the inviter’s valid Chinese ID (身份证) by the inviting party
Q1-style:
- Q2-style’s all documents required above
- Original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate or notarised certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members (spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law) between the applicants and inviting parties.
S2-style:
- An invitation letter provided by a foreign citizen with a resident permit should contain the following documents:
- Information of the applicant (incl. full name, gender, date of birth, passport number, etc.)
- Information regarding the visit (incl. purpose of visit, intended arrival date, intended place(s) to stay, intended duration of stay, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, and details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China);
- Information of the inviting party (incl. name, contact telephone number, address, signature of individual).
- A photocopy of resident permit and passport information page
S1-style:
- S1-style’s all documents required above
- Original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate or notarised certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members (spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law) between the applicants and inviting parties.
Please note that a visitor visa will possibly be granted all types of Chinese visa entry, even multiple entry 2 years. If you are applying for multiple entries, you should have been to China at least one time. A previous record of entry and exit should be required to meet multiple entry requirements.
If you are a Chinese origin, you should provide us with your previous Chinese visa or your original Chinese passport if you are applying for it for the first time.
